Detailed itinerary of 5 day desert trip in Morocco

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Benhaddou – Dades Valley (6-7 hours | 350 km)

We begin our journey in Marrakech, where we pick you up from your hotel or airport. As we leave the city behind, we ascend the High Atlas Mountains, passing through the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m). Along the way, we stop at breathtaking viewpoints, allowing you to admire the landscapes and capture stunning photos.

Our next stop is Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most famous kasbahs. Here, you have time to explore the ancient mud-brick ksar and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa,” due to its film studios and historical kasbahs. If time permits, you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah or the Atlas Film Studios.

The day ends in Dades Valley, also known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” After checking into your riad or hotel, you can relax and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga (5 hours | 290 km)

After breakfast, we explore the stunning Dades Valley, known for its Monkey Fingers rock formations. We then drive to Todra Gorge, where you can take a leisurely walk through its dramatic canyon with 400-meter-high cliffs.

Continuing our journey, we pass through Berber villages before reaching Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops. Here, you can learn about the region’s fascinating geological history.

By the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, where you prepare for an unforgettable camel trek into the Sahara Desert. As the sun sets over the Erg Chebbi dunes, we ride to our luxury desert camp, where we are welcomed with traditional mint tea.

The evening is filled with excitement—you enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, followed by live Berber music around the campfire. Spend the night in a private desert tent with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and comfortable bedding.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert Excursion

Wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, we embark on a 4×4 desert excursion to explore the surrounding landscapes.

We visit Lake Yasmina, a seasonal lake offering stunning reflections of the dunes. Our journey continues along the Rally Dakar off-road route, leading us to the Tisserdmin Oasis. We also stop at fossil quarries, where you can see remnants of prehistoric marine life.

We then visit a Berber nomadic family, providing you with insight into their traditional desert lifestyle. Next, we head to Khamlia village, famous for its Gnawa music. Here, you can enjoy a live performance of traditional African-Moroccan rhythms.

For lunch, we indulge in a local specialty—Berber pizza (Madfouna). Afterward, we return to our accommodation, where you have the option to relax or try quad biking or sandboarding in the dunes.

As the evening approaches, we enjoy another desert sunset before gathering for a relaxing night at camp.

Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt (4-5 hours | 270 km)

After breakfast, we say goodbye to the Sahara Desert and begin our journey toward Ziz Valley, one of the most picturesque oases in Morocco. Along the way, we stop to admire the breathtaking views of date palm groves and the Ziz River.

Our route takes us through Berber villages and past the town of Erfoud, where we visit a fossil museum or local souk (optional).

As we ascend the Middle Atlas Mountains, the landscape shifts from arid desert to lush forests. We arrive in Midelt, a tranquil town known for its apple orchards and fresh mountain air.

Here, we check into a cozy guesthouse or riad, where we enjoy a relaxing evening with dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Midelt – Azrou Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fes (4 hours | 215 km)

After breakfast, we continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in Azrou’s Cedar Forest, home to Barbary macaques. You can observe and even feed these friendly wild monkeys in their natural habitat.

Next, we visit Ifrane, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its alpine-style architecture and clean streets. We take a short stroll before heading to Fes, Morocco’s cultural and intellectual capital.

Upon arrival in Fes, we drop you off at your hotel, riad, or airport, marking the end of an incredible 5-day journey through Morocco’s diverse landscapes.

Best Desert trip from Marrakech to Fez

This Marrakech to Fes 5-day desert trip had it all—history, adventure, and relaxation. We learned so much about Moroccan culture from our guide, who made the experience even better. The Todra Gorge and Ziz Valley were stunning, but nothing compared to the night in the Sahara. The food was delicious, the riads were cozy, and everything was taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better trip.
